The Trouble

The Trouble is a Boston punk band active from 1996 to 1999. It forms in spring 1996 from the remains of Saturdays Kids, a failed basement punk group that plays a talent show at Belmont High earlier that year. The band is made up of friends who meet at shows and while hanging out in Harvard Square in the early and mid 1990s. Gibby Miller is a member of the group.

Style and name

The group plays hardcore punk, hardcore and punk rock, and builds a following among skinheads and punks in the Boston area. Its name comes from a misheard Cock Sparrer lyric: Gibby and Mike Hendricks think the words to the song “Bird Trouble” are “you got you got you know what? The Trouble”, and the name stays in use.

Releases and activity

The Trouble releases an EP and later a full-length CD on Atlanta-based Oi and streetpunk label GMM Records. The band plays shows around Boston and rarely performs outside the Boston, Providence and Portsmouth area, with one show in Ithaca, New York and one in Atlanta in 1998. It also contributes a few tracks to compilations. The group often misses gigs, appears without equipment, or jumps on stage to split bills with friends’ bands.

Split and later work

After recording its full-length release, the band splits. Its farewell show takes place in Boston in May 1999 at the Greek American in Central Square and is shut down by police shortly after the performance. Afterward, its records fall out of print. Sam Cave later plays in The Explosion and The Tonsils and becomes a solo musician in Canada. Gibby Miller goes on to form the Boston hardcore band Panic and later works on the electronic project Louderbach. Makt Peterson performs in many bands in New York, including jazz and rock groups, and is also linked in rumour to Choking Victim. Mike Hendricks continues to play in bands around Boston while finishing school.
