The Tiger Lillies
The Tiger Lillies are a cult British musical trio from London, formed in 1989 and active since then. The group centres on singer-songwriter Martyn Jacques, with Adrian Stout and Adrian Huge as members, and Christoph Butenop also listed among the group’s personnel. Their music sits in the dark cabaret tradition and is marked by a surreal, Brechtian style with dark humour and elements associated with gypsy cabaret.
Style and subject matter
The band begins as buskers, performing songs about the criminals, pimps and prostitutes of Soho in London. Their work is known for controversial themes, including songs about bestiality, prostitution and blasphemy, alongside an intense and outlandish stage presentation. This combination leads to both controversy and critical acclaim.
Theatre and wider work
Over time, The Tiger Lillies become involved in theatrical productions around the world. One of their best-known stage works is the critically acclaimed Shockheaded Peter.
