The Sunshine Underground
The Sunshine Underground are a British group from Telford, England, formed in 2000. They are made up of Matt Gwilt, Stuart Jones and Craig Wellington. The band is associated with dance and electronic music as well as indie rock, and their sound also draws on punk and funk influences.
Career
The band comes together in Leeds, where the members build a reputation as a live act. Their debut single, Put You In Your Place, is released through City Rockers. They follow it with a first headline tour that sells out venues in London and Leeds. Before that, they support LCD Soundsystem and other local acts, and this live activity leads to the Live Band of the Year award at the Independent Leeds Music Awards for 2005.
The Sunshine Underground later play the Carling Stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, and their debut album, Raise the Alarm, follows in 2006.
