The Sum Of
The Sum Of are a four-piece alternative rock band from Cornwall, based near Bude in the south west of England. The group consists of Ralf Salf on vocals, John Bluett on guitar, Wes Hutchinson on bass and keyboards, and Paul Feasey on drums.
Style and approach
The band takes its name from the idea that a machine is greater than the sum of its parts. They write collaboratively, with each member bringing in different influences. Their music uses a broad range of references rather than staying within one genre or style, and they experiment with time signatures, song structure and dynamics.
Activity and performances
The Sum Of build a reputation through a debut album and a series of live appearances, including Leopallooza, the Relentless Boardmasters surf festival and the Quicksilver British surf championship. They also win five South West Battle of the Bands competitions. The band tours in Holland and plays shows in cities including London, Bath, Bristol, Leamington Spa and Hastings.
Recognition
Sound engineer John Cornfield describes the band as “Like having Rage against the machine playing in St Austell….”
