The Stumble

The Stumble are a British blues band from Preston, United Kingdom, based in the north west of England. They play Chicago-style blues, with a sound described as a mix of blues, soul and old-school rhythm and blues.

History and style

The group has been active for around 20 years and develops a live reputation built on energetic performances and instrumental skill. Its roots lie in the blues, with founding member Colin Black and drummer and songwriter Boyd Tonner both associated with the new wave blues boom that emerges from Glasgow in the 1980s and 1990s. Over time, the band broadens its influences and writes original material alongside reinterpretations of blues and R&B repertoire.

Membership

The Stumble’s lineup includes Paul Melville on vocals, Colin Black on guitar, Jonny (Jon) Spencer on guitar, Dave Heath on bass, Simon Anthony on saxophone and Boyd Tonner on drums.

Recordings

The band releases a fourth album, The Other Side, and its earlier albums include The World Is Tough from 2006 and Houndgan from 2008. Their repertoire includes original songs as well as covers associated with artists such as Howling Wolf, B.B. King, Ike Turner and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.

Reputation

The Stumble perform widely at festivals across the UK and Europe, and their live shows attract strong recognition within the blues press. They are also noted as a band that Lazy Lester wanted to take back to the United States with him.
