The Strange Death of Liberal England
The Strange Death of Liberal England are a five-piece indie rock and post-rock group from Portsmouth, United Kingdom, active from 2005 to 2011. Their music combines instrument swapping, chanting, flutes, glockenspiels and howls, and is described in coverage of the band as noisy, chaotic and also beautiful. They are compared with acts including The Arcade Fire, British Sea Power, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead and Explosions in the Sky.
Releases and radio play
The band releases a debut EP and, in July 2007, puts out a mini-LP called Forward March!. Tracks from the EP receive radio play from Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1, and other songs are aired on CISM in Montréal.
Reception and live activity
They receive praise from several publications and are described as having a broad, varied instrumental approach. They are chosen as Drowned in Sound readers’ choice for 2006, which leads to a performance at the London Barfly alongside Jeniferever, The Maccabees and Jamie T. They also support Of Montreal on a UK tour.
