The Stereotypes
The Stereotypes are a UK powerpop group formed in 2001 by John Finkbiner on vocals and Mike Kamoo on guitar. The band also includes Dante Conti on guitar, Tim Hines on bass, Steve Blake on keyboards and Charlie Mcree on drums. Their sound draws on late-1960s jangly psych-pop, indie garage rock and 1980s alternative, alongside a post-punk DIY approach.
Style and sound
The group plays guitar-driven pop with strong melodies, and their music is described through references to classic rock and indie acts. They are compared to Wilco, Tom Petty, The Church, The Velvet Underground and The Strokes, while also being linked to garage-punk and Australian-style Rickenbacker pop. Their work is presented as rooted in familiar influences but still distinctive in its own right.
Releases and recognition
The Stereotypes release their first EP, 1-red, to critical acclaim. Their second release, 2-brown, appears on John D. Luerssen’s Billboard/Rolling Stone Top 10 list for 2004 and is described as combining garage-punk energy with Rickenbacker pop. The band’s fourth album, 4-green, is scheduled for release in spring 2007.
Live activity
The band also builds an early reputation as a live support act, opening shows for Buzzcocks, Spoon and Supergrass, among others.
