The South Austin Moonlighters, also known as S.A.M., are an Austin-based group active since 2011. They play an eclectic mix that draws on soul, country, New Orleans funk, rock and roll, blues, and americana. The band forms in Austin, United States, and builds its identity around a loose, varied approach to roots music.

Formation and line-up

The group forms in 2011 when five friends come together through mutual admiration and a shared aim of playing music for fun. The original line-up brings together musicians from established Austin acts: Aaron Beavers from Shurman, Phil Hurley from Stonehoney, Lonnie Trevino Jr. from Deadman, Josh Zee from the Mother Truckers, and Phil Bass from Monte Montgomery's Band. Phil Bass remains listed among the members.

Style and reception

The South Austin Moonlighters move between heartfelt soul, country, funky New Orleans-inspired rhythms, and rough-edged rock and roll. Their first live performance quickly shows the strength of the line-up, and they build a loyal following through a Tuesday night residency at the Saxon Pub in Austin.
