The Soup Dragons

The Soup Dragons are a Scottish alternative rock group from Bellshill, Scotland, active from 1985 to 1995. They take their name from a character in the 1970s children's television series The Clangers.

Origins and early line-up

The band forms in Bellshill, near Glasgow, and is associated with the wider Bellshill indie scene that also includes bands such as BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub. The original line-up includes Sean Dickson on vocals and lead guitar, Jim McCulloch on guitar and backing vocals, Sushil K. Dade on bass, and Ross A. Sinclair on drums. Sinclair leaves after the first full album, This Is Our Art, and Paul Quinn replaces him on drums.

Sound and development

The Soup Dragons begin with a Buzzcocks-influenced pop-punk sound and are initially linked with the C86 movement. Over six singles, later compiled on the US-only release Hang Ten, they move towards a more layered rock guitar style that leads into This Is Our Art. Their music then grows heavier before shifting into a rock-dance crossover style on Lovegod, reflecting the baggy and acid house-influenced sound that is popular in the UK at the time. They are sometimes criticised for following the baggy trend.

Key songs and recordings

The band is best known in the UK for a cover of the Rolling Stones song "I'm Free", which becomes their most notable British hit. In the United States, they are best known for "Divine Thing", which reaches the Top 40 and is their strongest American chart success. Later albums continue the rock-dance crossover approach as the group focuses on breaking into the US market.

Members and later activity

Songwriting is mainly handled by Sean Dickson, with some songs co-written by Dickson and Jim McCulloch. After the group splits in 1995, Paul Quinn joins Teenage Fanclub, Sushil K. Dade forms the experimental post-rock group Future Pilot AKA, and Sean Dickson forms The High Fidelity.
