The Soft Moon
The Soft Moon is an American post-punk band that begins as a solo project founded by Luis Vasquez in 2009. Based in San Francisco, the project develops into a live band built around Vasquez’s songwriting, guitar, synthesizers and vocals, with a focus on combining music and visuals in performance.
Line-up and formation
The group’s original core includes Justin Anastasi on bass, Damon Way on synthesizers and Ron Robinson handling visuals. Keven Tecon joins on drums in early 2012. The wider membership also includes Luigi Pianezzola and Matteo Vallicelli.
Style and influences
The Soft Moon works in post-punk and related dark, abrasive forms, with the sound also associated with dark wave, noise rock, rock, shoegaze, new wave, coldwave and industrial. Vasquez draws on early synthpunk and post-punk acts including Chrome, Suicide, Danse Society and The Units.
Early releases
Before the debut self-titled LP appears, Vasquez releases the singles “Breathe the Fire” and “Parallels” while the album is taking shape. The project then expands from a solo recording idea into a full band intended to deliver a more immersive live show.
Later years
The Soft Moon remains active until 2024. Luis Vasquez dies in 2024.
