The Shee
The Shee are an all-female folk group from the United Kingdom, known for combining original songs with traditional material. Their sound draws on Scottish folk, Gaelic song and bluegrass, and they are described as a band with strong vocals and instrumental ability.
Style and repertoire
The group’s music includes original compositions alongside a broad range of traditional songs and tunes. Their repertoire also reaches into bluegrass, Québecois and Americana influences, while keeping a strong base in Scottish folk.
Members
The Shee are Lillias Kinsman-Blake, Shona Mooney, Rachel Newton, Olivia Ross, Laura-Beth Salter and Amy Thatcher. Their instruments and roles in the group include flute, fiddle, electric harp, voice, viola, mandolin, accordion and clogs.
Festival work and wider activity
The band appears at major folk festivals including Celtic Connections and Sidmouth Folk Week. Individual members also have notable achievements in traditional music, including BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician 2006 and a BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Finalist credit for 2005. Members have also performed with other traditional acts and ensembles, including The Unusual Suspects, the Kathryn Tickell Band and the Scandinavian group Frigg.
Recorded work
The Shee’s album Decadence is issued on Shee Records. It is presented as the group’s second LP and includes songs such as “Vandy Vandy” and Abigail Washington’s “Sugar and Pie”.
