The Sect

The Sect is a UK drum and bass group made up of Meth, David Edwards and Ben Kay. The act begins in the late 1990s, when the members meet through mutual friends and start producing together. It develops from that initial collaboration into a trio focused on dark, underground drum and bass.

Style and influences

The Sect works in drum and bass with a strong technoid edge, and is also associated with darkstep, darkside and techno influences. Its sound draws on breaks, futuristic textures and dancefloor-oriented production. The group cites the Offkey approach as part of its direction, and the music also reflects influences from Underfire releases, Konflict, and early Prodigy tracks.

Career and releases

After forming, The Sect works with Raiden and Propaganda while living in the south of England, and its first label signing is to Nerve Attack. The group later has releases on Offkey and Obscene, and also has tracks signed to Offkey, Freak, Position Chrome, ELP and Habit. The Sect is associated with its own label, The Sect Music.

Performing and related projects

As individual DJs and producers, the members have releases across different genres. Blade and Method have DJed regularly at clubs and events across the UK and abroad for more than ten years, while Virtua has appeared in the DMC championships as a turntablist. Virtua also works as one half of the breakbeat duo Digital Breaks Foundation.

Scene position

The Sect plays nights across the UK and Europe and is known within drum and bass for its technoid, forward-looking style. The group remains part of the UK drum and bass scene and is identified with underground, club-focused production.
