The Puppini Sisters
The Puppini Sisters are a British group formed in 2004 and based in England. They specialise in close-harmony vocal music with a 1940s swing and jazz influence, and their style is also described as swing revival and vocal jazz. The group is named in tribute to The Andrews Sisters, although the members are not related.
Line-up and formation
The group is founded by Marcella Puppini, who studies fashion design at St Martins School of Art before moving on to music at Trinity College of Music. There she meets Kate Mullins and Rosanna Schura. Schura is later replaced by Stephanie O'Brien. Emma Smith joins in 2013. The group also performs with a three-piece backing band: Blake Wilner on guitar, Peter Ibbetson on drums and percussion, and Henrik Jensen on upright bass.
Style and repertoire
The Puppini Sisters focus on close vocal harmonies in a retro style. Their sound is sometimes described as swing-punk, reflecting a louder and more forceful approach than traditional swing. Their debut single is a cover of the Andrews Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Their second album includes classic covers, 1940s-style versions of contemporary songs, and original compositions.
Releases and recognition
Their first CD, Betcha Bottom Dollar, earns a Gold Disc for international sales in 2007 and reaches number 2 on the US Jazz Chart and number 9 on the US New Artist Chart. Their second album, The Rise & Fall of Ruby Woo, reaches number 5 on the US Jazz Chart in 2008. The group’s retro-styled website also wins the 2008 Cream of Yorkshire Gold Award for best website.
