The Proctors

The Proctors are an indie pop group from Wolverhampton, England. They form in 1993 and are associated with twee and indie pop. The band is made up around Gavin Priest, who previously plays with Adrian “Josef” Jones and Stephen Davies in The Cudgels as lead guitarist, drummer and bass guitarist respectively. Christina Priest, Gavin’s sister, joins as a fourth founding member and sings alongside him.

The group has a small live profile and builds a following mainly through recordings. It signs to Shelflife Records and also releases material on Sunday Records and Cloudberry Records. Its early releases include The Baby Blue EP and the Moon Song 7-inch in 1994, followed by the first album, Pinstripes and Englishmen, in 1996. Stephen leaves the band in 1993 before the Moon Song release. The Proctors cease in 1997 to work on other projects, then return in 2009 with a compilation of previously unreleased songs on Cloudberry Records.

After re-forming, the band issues the EP All The Books on Shelflife Records. A later line-up includes Gavin Priest, Stephen “Josef” Jones, Margaret Calleja and Thomas Aherne.
