The Popes
The Popes are an Irish folk punk and Celtic punk group formed in 1998. The group is associated with Paul McGuinness, Brian Kelly, Will Morrison, John Myers and Charlie Hoskyns.
Background
The Popes begin as a backing band for Shane MacGowan after his departure from the Pogues, though the two accounts of that split differ. The group then develops its own identity, helped by MacGowan’s erratic behaviour, which gives it space to perform independently.
Releases
The band releases two studio albums, Holloway Boulevard and Outlaw Heaven, both issued on Snapper Records. It also releases a live set paired with a studio set, again on Snapper Records.
Style
The Popes work in Irish folk, Celtic, folk punk and Celtic punk, drawing on the sound associated with MacGowan’s earlier work while also branching out as a separate group.
