The Pink Stones

The Pink Stones are an American six-piece country-rock band from Athens, Georgia, led by songwriter, guitarist and frontman Hunter Pinkston. The group’s debut album, Introducing… The Pink Stones, is issued on Normaltown Records, an imprint of New West Records.

Origins and formation

Hunter Pinkston is originally from Albany, Georgia, and grows up in a musical family. His father plays drums in local South Georgia bands in the 1970s, opens for the Allman Brothers and other acts, and remains a fan after stopping playing. Pinkston begins forming bands in high school and first plays in punk and hardcore groups.

In 2015, while still a college student, he hears Gram Parsons for the first time through the B-side of a single by the Lemonheads and begins exploring Parsons’ catalogue and related artists. He starts writing his own songs after revisiting music he heard as a child.

Pinkston transfers in 2016 to the University of Georgia’s Music Business programme and becomes part of the Athens music scene, where he meets musicians who become the core of the band: Will Anderson, Logan Brammer, Adam Wayton and Jack Colclough. Anderson, Brammer and Wayton are in the same music business programme, while Colclough joins after drumming in another band that shares members with the group.

Line-up

The Pink Stones are led by Pinkston with Anderson, Brammer, Wayton and Colclough among the main players. Steel guitarist John Neff later joins after filling in on pedal steel for several shows. Neff is a founding member of Drive-By Truckers and is a long-time figure in the Athens scene.

Recording and release

Introducing… The Pink Stones is recorded at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens and produced by Henry Barbe, who also works with Drive-By Truckers and Deerhunter, alongside the band itself.
