The Perceptions
The Perceptions are a UK funk and jazz group formed by long-time friends Neil Robinson on drums, Gary Crockett on bass, John Willmott on saxophone and flute, and Snowboy, a Latin percussionist and band leader. The line-up also includes Leigh Gracie on guitar and Sam Gambarini on Hammond organ.
Style and sound
The group is built around a late-1960s funk jazz sound associated with labels such as Prestige and Blue Note. Their music centres on tenor saxophone and organ-led funk jazz, with additional touches of blues and James Brown. They avoid novelty cover versions and focus on original material.
Recordings and approach
The Perceptions release an album of original hard-edged funk jazz that is recorded on tape with vintage equipment for authenticity. The group presents itself as drawing on the experience of musicians linked with The James Taylor Quartet, The Sound Stylistics, Speedometer, Lisa Stansfield, Incognito, Mark Ronson and The Superphonics.
