The Panacea
The Panacea is the drum and bass project of Mathis Mootz, a German producer from Wetzlar, born in 1976. The project is associated with breakcore, crossbreed, darkstep, industrial techno and techstep, and is also linked with darkside and dnb.
Style and output
The Panacea develops a dense, abrasive style that combines drum and bass with hardcore techno, jungle and industrial elements. Mootz is known for a harsh, heavy approach that brings together fast breaks, distorted production and noisy electronic textures.
He releases through the German label Position Chrome, where he is described as one of the main figures. Since 1996, the project has issued 23 EPs and five albums. The debut album, Low Profile Darkness, is one of the best-known releases and sells more than 12,000 copies. Other notable albums include Twisted Designz, Phoenix Metabolism, German Engineering, Underground Superstardom and Architettura.
Aliases and other work
Mootz also records under several other names, including Squaremeter, Disorder, Warfare, Kate Mosh, Bad Street Boy, Radar and Rich Kid. These recordings draw on experimental, electro and neo-industrial ideas.
Labels and collaborations
His work appears on labels including Mille Plateaux, Ant-Zen, Hands Productions, Ambush, Ad Noiseam, Kniteforce, Intransigent and Outbreak. He is also connected with the rebirth of Position Chrome and the launch of Offkey Recordings, and later joins the Anger Management DJ roster. The Panacea is also mentioned alongside the members Disorder and The Redeemer.
