The Mountain Firework Company

The Mountain Firework Company is a British folk and alt-country group formed in 2003 and still active. The band comes from the United Kingdom and is associated with folk, bluegrass, British roots music, alt-country and banjo-led arrangements.

Background

The group forms around four men who, at various times, work in the same bar, the Sidewinder in Brighton. They come together over heartache and wine, and the line-up later changes as one member leaves to drink and follow a woman, two more sorrowful drinking companions join, and then a third is added, giving the group six between them and a total of 36 strings.

Style and reception

The band is described as making folk and alt-country pop with a mix of darkness and humour. Their sound is also characterised as swamp-folk and alt-country blues, with a lazy country feel associated with the Ozark mountains. The presence of banjo and multiple stringed instruments is a notable part of their arrangement.

Their music is linked to a rough, barroom story of loss and movement, and is described as the sort of sound that can prompt boisterous reactions from listeners.
