The Modern

The Modern are a British electropop group from London, active from 2003 to 2006 and later known as Matinée Club. Their music sits in the electropop, pop and synth-pop area, and they are best known for the single “Jane Falls Down”.

Formation and members

The group includes Bob Malkowski, Emma Cooke, Nathan Cooper and Chi Tudor-Hart. Chi Tudor-Hart and Nathan Cooper both previously perform in Dirty Blonde. Emma Cooke, Robert James and Bob Malkowski also become members of The Modern. The band later continues in another form as Matinée Club, with Chi Tudor-Hart, Nathan Cooper and Emma Cooke among the members involved in that project.

Recordings and chart history

In 2006, the single “Industry” reaches the top 20 on debut, although it is removed from the official UK singles chart. “Jane Falls Down” remains the song most closely associated with the group.

Later activity

Bob Malkowski later joins Inertia, Circus of Horrors and Mayhem Deranged. By November 2008, members of Matinée Club decide to reform The Modern, with Rees Bridges added on drums.
