The Mariner's Children

The Mariner's Children are a seven-piece folk band active since 2008, associated with London, Brighton and Norfolk. They begin in Brighton in 2007, founded by multi-instrumentalists Benedict Rubinstein and Daniel Matthews after the pair meet in Vietnam and later return to Brighton for university. There they share an interest in revival folk and related artists including Pentangle, John Fahey and Fairport Convention.

Line-up

The group first performs as a trio after fiddler and vocalist Lizzie Ogle joins Rubinstein and Matthews. In 2009, the line-up changes again with Ogle's departure and the arrival of Emma Gatrill on vocals and accordion, Marcus Hamblett on bass, Emma Kramer on violin, Becca Mears on cello and Felix Weldon on drums.

Style and activity

The Mariner's Children play English folk rock and are described as making confessional songs with a dark edge. Their sound combines intricate guitar work with louder, more forceful passages, moving between sparse understatement and intense climaxes. The band later relocates to London.

Releases and collaborations

The group releases the New Moore Island EP, followed by the Sycamore EP in early 2013. Their members also play with a wide range of other acts, including Laura Marling, Willy Mason, Peggy Sue, Broken Social Scene, Damo Suzuki (Can), Sons Of Noel And Adrian, Alessi’s Ark and Eyes & No Eyes.
