The Magick Brothers
The Magick Brothers are an Australian group associated with the Gong family and centred on Daevid Allen and Graham Clark. Their music is acoustic-based and connects to Allen’s periods of spiritual self-initiation and renewal, with those themes reflected in the material.
Line-up and origins
The group includes Daevid Allen on acoustic guitars, glissando guitar and vocals, and Graham Clark on violin and guitar. Allen names the project after his first album from 1969. Clark meets Allen in London in 1988 at the last concert of Invisible Opera Co. UK and becomes the first instrumentalist recruited for Gongmaison. His virtuoso playing and direct approach are an important part of Allen’s later work.
Related work and personnel
Allen and Clark are joined in this wider circle by Mark Robson, who plays keyboards, didgeridoo, flute, Irish whistle and vocals. Robson is born in Sussex in the UK and spends much time in Australia, where he plays with the Invisible Opera Co. and with his own band Kangaroo Moon. That group tours regularly and releases three CDs, and becomes familiar on dance, festival and folk circuits. Robson’s writing and singing is compared with Robert Wyatt’s Rock Bottom period.
