The Macc Lads

The Macc Lads are a punk group from Macclesfield, England. They form in the late 1970s and are active from 1981 to 1995. The line-up includes The Beater, Stez Styx, Muttley McLad, Chorley The Hord, Phil “Fast Fret” McCavity, Al O’Peesha, Winston Dread and Johnny Mard.

Style and reputation

The band is known for explicit, confrontational lyrics and a deliberately offensive image. Their songs deal with drinking, sex, football, fighting, food such as chips and gravy, and bodily functions. They are also associated with sexism, homophobia and political incorrectness, and they are repeatedly banned from venues and radio stations while keeping a committed fan base.

Writing and themes

The Macc Lads are often compared to the Viz comic because of their crude humour and similar subject matter. Their songs include references to beer, with Newcy Brown appearing in one track and Boddingtons presented as the beer of choice for a “true Macc Lad”.

Vocal style

Muttley McLad is the lead singer and shouter. One reported personal highlight for him is rhyming “George Michael” with “menstrual cycle”.
