The Lounge Kittens

The Lounge Kittens are a Southampton-based group active since 2012. They are a trio made up of Jenny Deacon, Timia Gwendoline and Zan Lawther, and they perform cover versions in three-part harmony with a lounge-style approach. Their repertoire spans a wide range of genres, including rock, jazz, punk, psychobilly, ragga, hip hop, ska, pop, soul, metal, dance, house and grunge.

Formation and style

Jenny Deacon and Timia Gwendoline devise the act after meeting during a production of Sondheim's Company, where they perform as Amy and Joanne. Zan Lawther joins later, in late 2012, through a mutual friend from choir. The group develops around the idea of reworking unlikely songs in a more polished vocal style, with piano-led arrangements and close harmonies.

Performances and early activity

The act begins with songs such as “The Vengabus is Coming” and goes on to play debut shows that connect with audiences. From there, bookings follow for private parties, charity events, cabarets, pub shows, weddings and support slots in rock clubs. Their material centres on covers, and their range extends from mainstream songs to tracks associated with metal and other heavier styles.

Repertoire

The Lounge Kittens are known for presenting familiar songs in a different setting, often with a cheeky and theatrical tone. Their approach combines lounge, swing and jazz influences with the sensibility of a cover act that draws from across popular music rather than one fixed genre.
