The Locals

The Locals are a Chicago indie rock and alt-pop group formed in 1996. The band consists of singer, songwriter and guitarist Yvonne Doll, bassist Christy Nunes and drummer Kirk Snedeker. They release music through their own website and on iTunes, and their output includes five CDs.

History and recordings

The group tours across the United States and has also played in the United Kingdom. Its discography includes Big Picture, described as the band’s fourth studio release and its first full-length CD in nearly six years. The album is produced, recorded and mixed by Steven Gillis, who is the original drummer from Filter. The band’s earlier releases include four CDs, and SALT is listed as part of its catalogue.

Style and influences

The Locals’ sound ranges from singer-songwriter material to a more jam band-influenced approach, and it also includes guitar-heavy alt-pop. Their music draws on a wide set of influences, including PJ Harvey, the Pretenders, the Breeders, the Police and Sonic Youth.

Yvonne Doll also works as an internationally recognised photographer. Her cell phone photography series Sleepyurbanite has been featured by Vox Pop, National Talk Radio Ireland, The Today Show and NBC Chicago.

Name and other notes

The Locals is a registered trademark. The name is also used by other acts, including a band in Blackpool, and the Bay Area group the Matches, who were known as the Locals before changing their name.
