The Lines
The Lines are a London post-punk and new wave group formed in 1978 by Rico Conning, Jo Forty, Nick Cash and Mick Linehan. The band is active from 1976 but the London group associated with this name forms in 1978 and consists of Nick Cash, Rico Conning, Joe Forty and Mick Linehan. They are a UK new wave band.
Early releases and recordings
Between 1978 and 1983, The Lines release five singles, one EP and two LPs on vinyl. Their output includes the 1983 album Ultramarine, whose final track is played backwards. The song “White Night” is later covered by Brix Smith’s Adult Net.
Style and reception
Their music combines angular post-punk writing with melodic precision and draws comparisons with Wire, Joy Division, the Feelies and Mission of Burma. At the time, their records receive mixed reviews and little commercial success, but they later develop a cult following and become sought-after collector’s items. They are described as making music with angst-ridden angularity, danceable catchiness, dub-influenced atmosphere, sonic experimentation and strong hooks.
Live activity
The Lines play shows with bands including The Cure, Bauhaus, The Sound and Birthday Party, and also feature members of prag Vec and Alternative TV. They do not tour widely and rarely speak to the press, spending five years rehearsing, performing and recording with limited recognition.
