The Liberators

The Liberators are a funk, jazz, afrobeat, deep funk and jazz-funk band from the southern Dutch province of Limburg, based in Maastricht. The group exists from 1979 to 1992 and plays across Europe, with concerts reaching from Bergen in Norway to the Canary Islands. It becomes particularly well known in Maastricht.

Recordings and labels

The band makes three albums for Polydor and the Belgian label KKRecords.

Live activity

The Liberators perform at major Belgian festivals including the Belgium Rhythm-and-blues Festival in Peer, Marktrock in Leuven, Gentse Feesten and Rock Herk. They also tour as a support act for Gary Moore and Robert Plant. The group plays around 150 concerts a year and undertakes many tours before deciding to stop in 1992.

Members

Former members remain active in other fields and groups. Bass player Sjang Coenen works with several Belgian bands, including Novastar, Admiral FreeBee and Sioen. Lucas Vroemen works as a consultant in media technology.
