The Kindling

The Kindling is a London-based indie/americana project active since 2011, founded as a collaboration between songwriter and guitarist Guy Weir and drummer Leon Baker. The project develops from late-night songs and lo-fi recording ideas, with a sound that uses banjo, lap steel, mellotron, fireside percussion and layered harmonies.

Origins and early recordings

In autumn 2010, Weir and Baker begin exploring recording possibilities at Weir’s place in the Kent countryside. Their approach is influenced by the guerrilla recording spirit associated with Sparklehorse, Tom Waits and Mount Eerie. The material is shaped with distant vocals recorded from adjacent rooms, and the first batch of songs gives the project its initial identity.

Release history

Four of those early tracks make up the introductory EP From Out Of The Wreckage, which appears in December 2010. The project is associated with a stripped-back, nocturnal style that fits the indie, americana and lo-fi tags attached to it.
