The Jones

The Jones are a punk group from Sunderland, United Kingdom. They form in 1999 as Fatty Jones, then shorten their name to The Jones. The band begins with Dickie Hammond and Richie Glover, who has previously played in the Abs and Dub War, and Andy joins on drums soon after. Golly, the singer from HDQ, then comes in on vocals. The group records its debut single for Mother Stoat in 2000 and later releases the album Gravity Blues on Boss Tuneage.

Background

The Jones grow out of a line of North East punk connections involving HDQ, Leatherface and Stokoe. Dickie Hammond has played in HDQ and Leatherface, forms Doctor Bison with former ABs bandmates, and also plays in the part-time Sunderland band Stokoe before The Jones take shape. Stokoe records one single for Mother Stoat and is named in tribute to Bob Stokoe, the Sunderland F.C. manager associated with the club's FA Cup victory in 1973.

Band members

The core lineup of The Jones consists of Dickie Hammond, Richie Glover, Andy and Golly. Golly is known as the singer from HDQ, while Glover is formerly of the Abs and Dub War.

Repertoire and releases

The band's recorded output includes a debut single for Mother Stoat and the album Gravity Blues. The name The Jones is also shared by several other groups, including a 1960s Brazilian rock quartet from Rio de Janeiro, but the Sunderland band is the punk group from the United Kingdom.
