The Jolly Boys

The Jolly Boys are a mento group from Jamaica, formed in 1955. Their line-up includes Joseph Bennett, Moses Deans, Noel Howard, Albert Minott and Allan Swymmer. They are associated with mento, and also appear in tags linked to reggae and calypso.

Background and style

The group performs with bongos, banjo, rhumba box and kalimba, also described as a finger-piano. Their sound sits within Jamaican mento, a style they have represented for decades.

Early activity

In the 1950s, the group becomes known for performances at The Trident Hotel in Port Antonio and at private parties for wealthy and well-known guests, including events at Errol Flynn’s residence.

Later revival and recordings

Interest in the group is renewed in the late 1980s after Jules Shear hears them playing at the Trident. He later returns and produces Pop 'N' Mento and other albums. A further album, Great Expectation, is also planned for release.
