The Jellycats

The Jellycats are a female-fronted ska/punk/pop/rock group from Essex. The band forms in 2010 after Emma and Ollie, who have been writing songs together for some time, decide to start a group with Ollie’s brother Stu on drums. The line-up later settles with Emma on vocals, Ollie on guitar, Rob on bass and Stu on drums.

History

After forming, the band goes through several bass players in 2010 before Rob joins in early 2011. He is also known as Jonson. With the line-up in place, the group begins playing live regularly through 2011 to build experience and a fan base, taking on a range of small venues as well as larger festival appearances.

Style and influences

The Jellycats play a mix of ska, punk, pop and rock. Their influences include Madness, Blink 182, Less Than Jake, No Doubt and The Specials. They also draw inspiration from television programmes including The Mighty Boosh and The I.T. Crowd, as well as the 1990s show Man O Man. Their sound is described as having catchy hooks and uplifting melodies, and their live performances are noted for being energetic and bouncy.

Live activity

The band plays a number of gigs in 2011 in a wide range of venues, from small local rooms to festival stages. Their festival appearances include Download, Slam Dunk and Hevy. They also support acts including Blink 182, Bad Manners, [spunge] and Neville Staple of The Specials.
