The Japanese Popstars

The Japanese Popstars are an electronic music group from Northern Ireland, active since 2006, and made up of Declan McLaughlin, Gary Curran and Gareth Donoghue. Their music sits in dance and electronica, with house, electro house and electro also used to describe their sound.

Career

The group first gains attention in 2006 with its first two releases on a small indie dance label. From there, its profile grows through live performance and recording, with a reputation for energetic electronic dance music and a strong stage show.

Its debut album, We Just Are, appears on Gung-Ho!, and the group spends the following two years touring extensively in the United States, Australia, Europe and Japan. It also builds a live reputation that places it alongside major names in dance music.

Recordings and collaborators

The Japanese Popstars later signs to Virgin Records and releases its second album, Controlling Your Allegiance. That album includes earlier singles such as Let Go, featuring Green Velvet, and Destroy with Jon Spencer. The record also brings in Robert Smith, Tom Smith, Lisa Hannigan, Morgan Kibby of M83 and James Vincent McMorrow as guest contributors.
