The Hustle is a Philadelphia-based progressive hip-hop group formed in 2007. It blends hip-hop with rock, soul, jazz and funk, and uses live instrumentation rather than looped samples or programmed beats. The group is fronted by MC Kuf Knotz, whose real name is Ty Green, and Nora Whittaker, both of whom provide the main vocals.

Style and approach

The Hustle builds its sound around traditional hip-hop while drawing on a wide range of other styles. Its material is described as melodic and energetic, with lyrics that focus on abstract ideas and socially conscious themes. These include love, loss and the importance of being true to oneself. The group presents itself as a hip-hop alternative with a sound that can sit alongside hardcore and gangsta rap, while remaining distinct from them.

Members

Alongside Kuf Knotz and Nora Whittaker, the group includes Tom Copson Jr. on guitar, Bradlee Beats on drums, Kurt Shakemore on bass and DJ Kingspin, whose real name is Ray Ventura.

Performances and reception

The Hustle plays comfortably across different genres and shares bills with indie rock acts, jam bands, pop bands and singer-songwriters. It develops a strong local following in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, supported by local attention and radio play for the EP track Run Wit Me.

Influences

The group draws influence from progressive artists including OutKast, Common, Radiohead and Beck.
