The Head And The Heart

The Head and the Heart are an American indie-folk band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 2009. The group consists of Josiah Johnson on vocals and guitar, Jonathan Russell on vocals and guitar, Charity Rose Thielen on violin and vocals, Chris Zasche on bass, Kenny Hensley on keyboards, and Tyler Williams on drums. The band is made up primarily of transplants to the Seattle area.

Their music combines folk and indie elements with a strong emphasis on vocal harmonies, piano melodies, minimalist drumming, bass, hand percussion and foot stomps. Their songs often deal with themes of new starts, what is left behind, and moving forward.

The band self-releases its eponymous debut album in 2010, then Sub Pop reissues it with a re-recorded version of “Sounds like Hallelujah”, the addition of live favourite “Rivers and Roads”, and a new master. Its second album, Let’s Be Still, follows in 2013. Signs of Light appears in 2016, and Living Mirage in 2019.

Josiah Johnson also releases a solo album, Every Feeling on a Loop, in 2020.
