The Happy Soul
The Happy Soul is a UK power pop group led by Mark James Simpson, who was born in Longsight, Manchester, and raised in Salford. His early musical work is with Roselin, a band he forms with his childhood friend Francis John Robinson in Salford.
Formation and style
After moving between homes in and around Manchester, Simpson begins recording under the name The Happy Soul as a solo project, later performing with a small ensemble. The music draws on blues, jazz, music hall, British indie and rock and roll, combining those influences into a distinctive sound. The act is active from 2016 to the present and is identified as a power pop group.
Line-up and collaborators
In this later ensemble format, Joe Nathan-Wilson plays drums, Jonah Hancell contributes singing saw and vocals, and Marquee Moon plays bass.
Recordings
The first album, The Modern-day Composer Refuses To Die, is released on Invisible Girl Records in 2010. A follow-up album, WHITEDOTBLACKTRIANGLE, is also associated with the project.
