The Great Unwashed

The Great Unwashed are a New Zealand lo-fi indie group formed by brothers David Kilgour and Hamish Kilgour after the 1982 breakup of The Clean. They use a tongue-in-cheek name and work in a style built around primitive home recordings with a slightly experimental edge.

History

In 1983, the group releases Clean Out of Our Minds, a LP made up of early home recordings. The record attracts a positive response from listeners who already follow The Clean. Peter Gutteridge joins on bass, and the Kilgour brothers play a small number of live dates. A five-track double single follows.

Line-up and later development

By mid-1984, The Great Unwashed expands to a quartet with the addition of Ross Humphries. The group then disbands before the end of that year.
