The Fireflies

The Fireflies are an American doo-wop group from Long Island, New York, active from 1957 to 1967. The group is formed by producer Gerry Granahan and goes through several line-up changes during its run. It is one of the first groups in which all members both sing and play instruments, and it is the first all-white vocal harmonising group to appear at the Apollo Theater.

Recording career

The group’s first single is The Crawl, released on Roulette Records. Its best-known record is You Were Mine, issued on Ribbon Records in 1959 and written by Paul Giacalone about a girl he meets while touring. The song spends 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaks at number 21, and reaches number 15 on Canada’s CHUM Hit Parade.

The version of the group associated with You Were Mine includes Paul Giacalone on bass vocals and drums, Ritchie Adams as lead singer, Lee Reynolds, John Viscelli on saxophone and vocals, and Carl Girsoli on guitar and vocals. Following the single’s success, The Paulette Sisters record an answer song, I Was Yours.

Later singles and end of the group

Later releases include I Can’t Say Goodbye, Marianne, and My Girl, all from 1960. Of these, I Can’t Say Goodbye is the only other charting single, spending three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching number 90. In 1962 the group reappears on Taurus Records with You Were Mine for Awhile and Blacksmith Blues on Hamilton Records, followed by three more singles on Taurus, but it does not return to the charts. The group disbands in 1967.

Members and later activity

Paul Giacalone is born on September 28, 1939 and dies on June 27, 2013. Ritchie Adams, whose real name is Richard Adam Ziegler, later releases solo singles and builds a songwriting career with hits including Tossin’ and Turnin’ and After the Lovin’; he dies on 6 March 2017. John Viscelli later lives in South Florida.
