The fin.
The fin. is a Japanese group formed in 2012 by Yuto Uchino and Kaoru Nakazawa. The line-up consists of Yuto Uchino and Kaoru Nakazawa, with Uchino credited on vocals, guitar and synthesiser, and Nakazawa on bass and synthesiser.
Style and sound
The band’s music is built around Uchino’s songwriting, recording, mixing and production. Their sound combines indie and psychedelic pop with soul, funk and jazz influences, and is described through a soft, mellow style with a floating, dreamy quality. Uchino’s lyrics focus on fear, growth and change, which adds to the band’s distinctive atmosphere.
Releases
The fin. releases its debut album, Days With Uncertainty, in 2014. Uchino records, mixes and produces the album himself. The second album, There (2018), brings in Bradley Spence as co-producer for the first time. The EP Wash Away follows in 2019 and credits Bradley Spence and Jake Miller as co-producers. The third album, Outer Ego (2021), is entirely recorded, mixed and produced by Uchino.
Live activity
The band performs in the UK, the US, Europe and Asia, and appears at festivals including FUJI ROCK, Summer Sonic, SXSW and The Great Escape. During a 2023 China tour, the group plays shows in more than 25 cities and draws a combined audience of over 20,000 at its solo performances.
Collaborators
Bradley Spence, who works with Jamiroquai, Radiohead and alt-J, co-produces There and Wash Away. Jake Miller, who works with Bjork and Arca, also co-produces Wash Away.
