The Fates

The Fates is a group associated with Sheffield. More than one act uses the name, but the earliest one is a folk and psychedelic project formed by Una Baines, formerly of The Fall and Blue Orchids, with two other women. It begins after Blue Orchids break up following a short period as Nico’s backing band on a European tour.

Furia and Taboo

The group releases Furia on Una Baines’ own label, Taboo, in 1985. The album is described as combining dark, sometimes ritualistic folk with electronic elements and improvised passages. It is later reissued by Bird Records in 2014.

Other acts using the name

The name is also used by several other groups: a Canadian-based trio of Lori Reid, Lin Elder and Jenny Allen, who blend alternative pop, jazz and soul; a Melbourne band influenced by 1980s post-punk and new wave; and a Boston pop/rock band formed by students at Berklee College of Music and Boston University in 2009, with Beau Cassidy, Josh Friedman, Jon Greene, Tyler LeVander and David White.
