The Family Elan

The Family Elan is a folk and psychedelic folk group associated with England and the United Kingdom. The project centres on Chris Hladowski, who brings together original material, songs drawn from lost and found tapes, and traditional pieces.

The group’s music combines European folk material with devotional and Sufi-influenced elements. Hladowski contributes vocals and plays saz and bouzouki, using those instruments to create drones, dense treble textures, and a shimmering layered sound across interwoven melodies.

Hanna Tuulikki of Nalle also provides vocals, adding a voice that moves between gentle qawwali-style singing and folk song. The Family Elan’s work is described as communal in feel, and the group stands apart through its distinctive mixture of folk traditions and progressive, dervish-like passages.

The group issues material that includes the debut Stare of Dawn and Bow Low Bright Glow, which is presented as a companion to that earlier release. One of the pieces associated with the group is “The BlackPlanets Of Her Eyes”.
