The Extraordinaires

The Extraordinaires are an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, active since 2004. The group consists of Matt Gibson, Pete Hurd, Jay Purdy and Jacob Wolf. They are associated with indie rock, folk, alternative, indie and folk-rock.

Releases and format

The band is signed to Punk Rock Payroll in South Philadelphia. Their albums are issued as handmade, hand-screened, cloth-bound storybooks, which gives their recorded work a distinctive physical format. They have released three full-length albums.

Full-length albums

Their first album, Ribbons of War, is a themed record built around the story of the Captain, Annelies and their forbidden love. Their second full-length, Short Stories, is a set of individual songs, including “The Arsonist”, “Warehouse Song” and “Neighborhood Watch”.

Live performance and touring

The Extraordinaires’ live shows are theatrical and energetic. The singer plays a guitar shaped like a fish. In 2008, the band opens for Man Man on a US tour.

Other releases

The band also releases Battle of the Vans, a split 7-inch with labelmates Kill You in the Face.
