The Excitements

The Excitements are a soul and rhythm and blues group from Spain, formed in Barcelona in 2010. The band is founded by Adrià Gual on rhythm guitar and Daniel Segura on bass, and it remains active.

Line-up

The group features Koko-Jean Davis on lead vocals, Lalo Lopez on lead guitar, Adrià Gual on rhythm guitar, Alfonso Luna on drums, Daniel Segura on bass, Nico Rodríguez Jauregui on baritone saxophone and Marc Lloret on alto saxophone.

Style and influences

Their music draws on old-school R&B and soul rather than contemporary soul-funk styles. The group is influenced by 20th-century African American music and is associated with artists such as Etta James, Ike and Tina Turner, early James Brown and Sugar Pie de Santo. Their sound combines a tight rhythm section with saxophones and a performance style rooted in early 1960s soul tradition.

Performances and releases

Since forming, The Excitements have played major festivals including Couleur Café in Belgium and Les Nuits Secrètes in France, as well as jazz festivals in San Sebastián, Nancy, Lille and Liège. They also appear at specialist events such as Funtastic Dracula Carnival, Purple Weekend and Beat Goes On, and they tour clubs across the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.

Their first LP and several 45s are released on Barcelona label Penniman Records.
