The Egg

The Egg are an electronic and drum and bass act from Sevilla. They make live house, rocktronic, funk and ambient-influenced dance music, combining electronic instruments with live playing, video triggering, samples, and live and vocoded vocals.

Style and influences

Their music draws on Pink Floyd, Groove Armada, The Beloved, New Order, Underworld, and the shoegaze and nu-gaze scenes. They move between club settings and chilled festival environments, and they are associated with electronic, house, chillout, electro and electronica.

Career and releases

The project begins in the early 1990s in the Oxford music scene under the name Cornflower Concept, with bassist Dave Gaydon in the line-up. With Gaydon still involved, the group becomes The Egg and develops a live reputation for long, energetic two-hour dance sets supported by conceptual video and lighting.

Their commercial breakthrough comes with Albumen in 1996, which includes David Gaydon and Mark Revell alongside Ned and Maff Scott. They later build an international live profile, including touring South Africa in the late 1990s and playing across Europe, Australia and Brazil. They also perform in the United States, including a three-week tour of the Mid-West and East Coast and two nights at New York’s Nokia Theater, and they are welcomed into the US jam band scene.

Their music gains wider attention through Tocadisco’s electro-house remix of Walking Away and David Guetta’s bootleg of the same track. Their album Forwards is released in the USA by Spectacle Entertainment/Neurodisc.

The Egg work with, or are remixed by, Mylo, Rollo of Faithless, Next Men, Decoder of Kosheen, Fila Brazillia, Monk & Canatella, Pentatonic, Grand National, Dusty Kid Pop, Tocadisco, Ulrich Schnauss, Camille Jones, Sophie Barker of Zero 7, Oliver Koletski, Atomic Hooligan and Greg Hunter. They also work with producers Benji Vaughan, also known as Younger Brother and producer of Forwards, and Bruno Ellingham, who produces New Order, Goldfrapp and Mertz.

The line-up includes Ned Scott on vocals and keyboards, Maff Scott on drums, Ben Cullum on bass, Matt White on guitar, and Shaun Hunter on live sound and co-writing.

Live presence

The Egg are a regular presence on the UK festival circuit and also fit DJ-led club environments. They are associated with a strong live show built around electronic and acoustic performance, visual elements and audience-friendly dance music.
