The Duloks are a British group formed in East London in 2005, active from 2006, and associated with riot grrrl, space rock, alternative and indie sounds. The group begins as a project for Canadian-born Mar Sellars after she arrives in the British Isles following the end of her previous band, The Ewoks. Sellars starts a MySpace page for the band in late 2005, first brings in her housemate Alice on keyboards, and then adds Mira Manga after advertising for a female singer. The group’s earliest line-up appears as Sellars, Alice and Manga, later becoming a trio and then a broader rotating unit.

Early history

The Duloks give their first performance at Sellars’ living-room birthday party, staged as part of a Nerds & Jocks-themed celebration. The band then begins to play London shows and attracts bookings on the basis of photographs and their themed outfits. Early performances help establish their style, which the group describes as E.R.I.C. indie rock comedy electro. They also become associated with Ladyfest events around Great Britain.

Line-up

The group’s membership changes over time. Alice leaves before the end of 2005 to focus on Artha & Martha and her monthly indie-disco night Spiral Scratch. Sellars and Manga then recruit Mina, described in the account as the band’s smallest member. The current line-up is supplemented by Oliver Levy, who appears as a male Dulok when Mina is unavailable. The group is identified in the verified facts as consisting of Mar Sellars, Oliver Levy and Mira Manga.

Style and performance

The Duloks perform frequently and use costume and character-based dressing as part of their live presentation. Their outfits vary between regular clothing and themed group looks, including versions of The Rolling Stones, schoolchildren, mariners, cowboys and Indians, and space aliens. The group also plays shows outside the UK in France, Germany and Norway.
