The Distillers

The Distillers are an American punk rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1998 and active from 1998 to the present. The group is associated with punk rock, punk and alternative rock, and has been linked to Distilla Nation Music. Their membership includes Brody Dalle, Tony Bevilacqua, Ryan Sinn, Andy Granelli, Rose Mazzola, Kim Chi and Matt Young.

Formation and early line-up

The band is formed by Australian-born Brody Dalle, who becomes the lead singer and develops a harsh vocal style that becomes a defining feature of the group. Despite frequent line-up changes, she plays guitar, sings, and writes or co-writes nearly every song on the band’s albums. Early members include guitarist/vocalist Rose Casper, bassist Kim Chi and drummer Matt Young. Tony Bradley also plays guitar, and Ryan Sinn plays bass.

Recordings and labels

The Distillers release their first two albums through Hellcat Records and Epitaph Records before moving to Sire, which is part of Warner Music Group. Their first EP as a band after a long gap is Man vs. Magnet, released in 2018. The EP includes a new edit of Brody Dalle’s 2014 song “Blood in Gutters” as a B-side.

Hiatus and later activity

The band splits for the first time in 2004. After that, Brody Dalle and Tony Bevilacqua form Spinnerette. Ryan Sinn later joins Angels & Airwaves and leaves after two years. Dalle also begins a solo project, working with Alain Johannes and Michael Shuman of Queens of the Stone Age, and with Shirley Manson of Garbage. She later signs to Caroline Records, releases her solo album with production by Alain Johannes, and includes guest appearances from Shirley Manson, Nick Valensi of The Strokes and Emily Kokal of Warpaint.

In 2018, The Distillers share new material, tour the United States and Europe, and release Man vs. Magnet, marking their return after 15 years without an EP.
