The Diplomats

The Diplomats, also known as Dipset, are a rap group from the United States. The group forms in Harlem, New York, and is active from 2002. It is associated with east coast hip hop, gangsta rap and hip hop.

History and membership

The group forms around rappers Cam’ron and Jim Jones. Other members include Freekey Zekey, Juelz Santana and Katt Williams. The group previously signs to Roc-A-Fella Records and later records through its own label, Diplomats Record, also referred to as Diplomat Records.

Releases and label work

The Diplomats release their debut album Diplomatic Immunity through Diplomat Records, followed by Diplomatic Immunity 2 through Koch Entertainment. The label roster also includes artists such as 40 Cal., J.R. Writer, Hell Rell, Un Kasa and Jha Jha, along with the London-based duo S.A.S. Jay Bezel is signed to Sure Shot Records. Cam’ron also records through Asylum Records.

Style and influence

The group is known for incorporating distinctive slang into its lyrics, with terms such as “doggie,” “no homo,” “piff,” “huff,” “u mad?”, “move the movement,” “off' wit' Ya' Kufi Smacker,” “goonies goo goo,” “duck tales,” “family matters” and “coochie rap” becoming widely used in hip hop. It also coins the greeting “What’s Really Good?”.

Mixtapes and other activities

The Diplomats build a strong reputation through mixtapes, especially in New York, and generate significant sales from them. The group also has its own liquor brand, Sizzurp.
