The Din

The Din form in late summer 2008 and develop their sound over most of a year at The Bleach Factory before appearing on the Newcastle music scene. The band draw on a mix of styles and resist simple categorisation, with their music described as retro-psyche-rock’n’roll in a broad sense. Their sound combines textures from different genres, with bluesy 1960s pop and dirty 1990s rock among the influences, alongside a strong groove and a playful approach.

Line-up

The five-piece comes from three countries. Nick Grimes sings and plays guitar, Callum Thompson plays bass and sings backing vocals, and Mathew Ross plays percussion; all three are from North-East England. Peter Currie plays keys and comes from Northern Ireland, while Victor Solana plays drums and sings backing vocals and comes from del Penedès in Spain.

Releases and performances

The band’s debut CD, EP1 – The Bleach Factory Sessions Live, includes six live tracks recorded at their own studio and two bonus songs. A second EP follows, and the group continue to write at a steady pace. After success at Festa Major events in Spain in 2009, they prepare for a European tour taking in Spain, Holland, Germany and Poland, as well as UK festival dates, including a performance at The Sage Gateshead.

Style

The Din’s music is described as having catchy melodies and intricately woven arrangements that move forward with an intoxicating groove. The group present this as the sound of friends playing together, with playfulness remaining central to their identity.
