The Deadlights

The Deadlights are a United States metal group from Southern California that is active from 1998 to 2000. The band forms around vocalist Duke and drummer Jim Falcone, who add bassist Jerry Montano and lead guitarist Billy Roan to complete the lineup.

Early history

The group takes its name from the lights at the end of the tunnel after a near-death experience, with its title also linked to a Stephen King novel. The Deadlights begin playing hard-edged shows in the late 1990s alongside California acts including System of a Down and Coal Chamber, and build a reputation through their live performances.

Record deal and releases

After attracting attention on the live circuit, the band signs to Elektra Records in 1999. Their self-titled debut album appears in 2000 and is produced by Sylvia Massey. The group also appears on the Ozzfest 2000 tour.

Break-up and aftermath

The Deadlights’ run is brief. In early 2001, they are dropped from Elektra and break up amid internal conflict, including one altercation that leaves a member with a broken jaw. After the split, Duke begins a new musical project in California, while Jerry Montano joins the heavy metal band Nothingface. Duke Collins dies on 21 March 2015.
