The Chariot

The Chariot is a mathcore and metalcore group from Douglasville, United States. It forms in 2003 and is active until 2013. The band is led by former Norma Jean frontman Josh Scogin and is associated with chaotic hardcore, hardcore, metalcore and Christian metal.

Formation and line-up

The Chariot begins as a project around Josh Scogin after his time in Norma Jean. Across its career, the group goes through numerous line-up changes. Members associated with the band include Tony Medina, Joshua Beiser, Keller Harbin, Josh Scogin, Jeff Carter, Jake Ryan, Daniel Eaton, Jon Terrey, Jonathan Kindler, Dan Vokey, Bryan Russell Taylor, David Kennedy and Stephen Harrison, as well as Brandon Henderson.

Recorded output

The band releases its debut album, Everything Is Alive, Everything Is Breathing, Nothing Is Dead, And Nothing Is Bleeding, in a single take, without mastering, which gives it a raw sound that matches its live performances. In winter 2005 it issues the EP Unsung, which includes two new songs and four re-recordings from the debut album.

Its second full-length, The Fiancée, appears in 2007. This release uses more defined production than the EP, while still keeping the band’s harsh writing style. The closing track includes the first and last verses of the hymn The Trumpet, performed by The Sacred Harp Singers, who also appear at the end of And Shot Each Other. The song Then Came To Kill is a re-recording of Kenny Gibler (Play The Piano Like A Disease) from Unsung and includes guest vocals from Hayley Williams of Paramore.

In 2009 the band releases Wars And Rumors Of Wars, its third full-length and fourth overall release. The album moves slightly back toward the heavier, more chaotic feel of the debut while keeping the clearer production of The Fiancée. It is hand stamped and hand numbered.

Live reputation and activity

The Chariot develops a reputation for wild and chaotic stage performances, which helps establish its profile in the underground scene. Despite extensive personnel changes, this live identity remains central to the band’s image throughout its career.

In 2008, Dan Eaton and Jake Ryan leave to pursue Queens Club. Jon Terry also leaves, while Jonathan Kindler remains on bass. The later line-up includes players from I Hate Sally and The Rein, and the band tours Europe for much of 2008 before recording the next album.

Label and touring context

The Chariot is signed to Solid State Records. Its 2009 album is released as the band begins its first United States tour of that year, supporting Gojira’s The Way Of The Flesh tour alongside Car Bomb.
