The Burning Hell
The Burning Hell is a Canadian folk rock group centred on songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalists Ariel Sharratt and Jake Nicoll. The project also often includes additional collaborators.
Style and approach
The band’s songs move between genres and often use dense writing built from literary, historical, cultural and pop-culture references. Their work frequently returns to themes of apocalypse and ruin, while also emphasising participation, connection and a sense of optimism. Their live performances are described as joyful and rooted in direct contact with audiences.
Recording and activity
The Burning Hell works largely from outside the mainstream music industry, releasing albums and singles through independent labels and publishers. Touring is a major part of the project, and the group’s approach is strongly associated with building connections through repeated live performance across different places.
